How to install wall bars on a plaster or lath wall (no exposed studs)
Older homes are often the trickiest to mount wall-mounted gym equipment in, and also the ones where it looks best — high ceilings, plaster walls, real trim. The catch is that plaster-and-lath walls don't show you where the framing is the way exposed drywall sometimes does, and a wall bar carrying someone's full body weight during a pull-up needs to be anchored into structural framing, not just the plaster surface.

Why the plaster itself can't hold the load
Plaster and lath is a thin, somewhat brittle surface layer over a wood or metal frame. It can hold a picture hook, but it was never designed to bear dynamic, repeated load — the kind a wall bar sees every time someone hangs, pulls, or swings from it. Every mounting point needs to reach through the plaster into the stud or joist behind it. Skipping this step is the single most common cause of wall-mounted equipment failing.
Finding the studs behind plaster
A standard magnetic stud finder can struggle on plaster because the lath nails and wire mesh underneath create false readings. A few more reliable approaches:
Use a stud finder rated for plaster and lath. Look for one that specifically lists plaster or lath compatibility — these use deeper-scanning sensors than basic models.
Check for reference points. Electrical outlets and switch boxes are almost always mounted to a stud on one side. Baseboards are sometimes nailed into studs at regular intervals too, which can give you a starting rhythm to measure out from (studs are commonly spaced 16 or 24 inches apart on center, though older homes can vary).
Try a small test hole. In an area that will be covered by the mounting plate anyway, a small pilot hole and a stiff wire can confirm solid wood versus hollow space, before you commit to a visible hole.
Tap and listen. A dull, solid sound usually means a stud behind it; a hollow, resonant sound usually means open space. This isn't precise on its own, but it's a useful way to narrow down a search area before using a stud finder.
When the studs don't line up with the rungs
This is the most common real-world problem: your ladder's mounting points are evenly spaced, but your studs are not exactly where you need them. Two approaches work:
A mounting board. Attaching a length of solid lumber horizontally across several studs first, then mounting the ladder to that board, spreads the load across multiple studs regardless of where the ladder's own mounting points fall. This is the approach most installers reach for on older or irregular walls.
Heavy-duty plaster anchors as a supplement. For mounting points that can't reach a stud, load-rated anchors designed for plaster and drywall can share some of the load — but they should never be the only thing holding a weight-bearing point. Use them alongside stud-anchored points, not instead of them.
When to call in a professional
If your walls are solid masonry, you're not confident locating studs, or the ceiling height means you're working from a ladder near the top of a stairwell, it's worth hiring a local handyman or contractor for an hour. The cost is small relative to the equipment, and it removes any guesswork from a mounting point that will carry real, repeated weight.
